Back to Work: It's been a couple of years since PAINTING. Now I'm PAINTING once more, and it's always such a mirror. Fer instance, it makes it obvious that I spend way too much time on the computer. Don't know why, it's just that since I've taken the brush up again—by necessity, I didn't have many paintings left to sell—it's more noticeable what a useless time suck it is. Worse than useless, filling head with all kinds of so-called knowledge. But it's not knowledge, it's data, and it's mostly useless, and it takes up much needed space in our heads. I think the singularity will be, not the moment when computers get as smart as humans, but the moment when there is more data than the universe can hold, and it all folds up into an origami elephant on my dad's desk.As far as painting goes: More theater pieces, more pieces out of the world of Subject to Verification, local scenery, the new house... tho it's a bit less interesting to me as a painter than other houses, even though it's more comfortable. More modern.

It will be like winter at Tahoe up here.

I mean, show down. At a local food place. Nice to have the children home, but already wondering what their next adventure will be.

Possible scheme: getting a temp studio in Vienna (Wien) and paint, then do a show later. Then it occurs to me: do I really want to paint? Better question: what should I be working on now? Orders as if from above, but directions come from within, that is, the gut. How it feels.

I feel like continuing work on Subject to Verification movie.... so ... that's what I'll do...

Did a reading, a signing, sold some paintings. Feedback from the reading, and those who have read some or all of the book: priceless. It's a bit of a trick to not be attached to good words, praise, but, at the same time, use your skillful means as a producer of some work - you need to know how it works out in the world. and it's gratifying when you hear that it does. But nah, not attached to that. At all.

This magnificent cathedral - it's HUGE - is now surrounded by hundreds of high-end shops, and thousands and thousands of high-end shoppers. I joined in the fun, too. But I was haunted by the different pictures of the two ages. What was central to each, what motivated each.

I love modern life: the convenience, the choices, the freedom (at least for me), the power. But I also sense something missing, something displaced by the hunger for acquisition. I guess it's up to each of us to find it in this modern age.

I thought I was going to quit drinking coffee in Vienna.

This is the first appearance of the dangerous looking young man who reminds me of a certain not-so-friendly guide (but then he's a not-so-un-friendly guide, too) who's usually pictured with blood coming out of his mouth - that's after destroying all of your delusions or obstacles or whatever... it just seems a bit disconcerting at the time. And here he comes.

The bicycle is a mystery to me, tho it's provenance might be The Third Policeman, which begins with the question, "Is it something about a bicycle?"

We never find out.

There's a physics theory that time doesn't exist (best laid out in The End Of Time by Julian Barbour) which I find very persuasive. It is, in a few words, this: there's a multidimensional space where all possible universes exist. Only a few of those possible universes support life and our (so-called) intelligence. We find ourselves in one now. Consciousness is the mystery here. How it "finds itself" in any particular place. No one knows.

But even if you accept the theory, and the idea that any moment's history is encoded within it (since each moment is separate from all others, and what seems like continuity is mere adjacency,) how does music work? Any particular note means nothing without the context of all the notes that came before it. We anticipate the notes to come, and when they aren't "right" it doesn't sound like music...

Where are we?

One day you realize that it's never "just one more time."

There's always another. Another road, another entering and another leaving.

I want to stay in this cozy room with the flowers and floor lamp; there's a sense of a nice home behind, where a grandmother or great aunt lives and waits. It's timeless, with a mantel lined with black and white fotos of men in uniforms and women in aprons.

A screened-in back porch, shucking corn and listening to the clothes dry on the line. An old man has puttered contentedly in a warm garage where the smell of old wood and motor oil combine. Jars of screws and nails, saved from other projects, in a row on a workbench. A spider web.

I want to stay, but it's not possible.

My Goodness. A Russian or Turkish dancer spins about with Chagallian laughter. A Roualt harrumphs, but everyone else is loving the grey-and-green combination of clouds and trees. It's a marvelous combination that Nature is very proud of. When the light from the clouds makes the leaves seem to glow. Mitsubishi or is it IBM is trying as ever to force itself into the fairy tale but with undying lack of success. For which we're all grateful.
Beauty and Beast, that sort of thing. I can smell the nasturtiums and roses in the heat. A lovely sunset far away, but so beckoning to a romantic (but phony) like me. But then not phony, too. A blue mona lisa smile keeps us honest, but adds, "It's your birthday."

In a dream I'm a waiter - I've done that a lot - but I'm the only one to show up for work, and the dining hall is endless, thousands of tables. And I can only do one thing: start working. In the dream, there's no alternative at all, the possibility never even comes to mind. Only a sense of I'm going to be doing this forever.

An old hunter - like Dersu Uzala perhaps - recounts the adventures he's had on a long hunt. Fires on the horizon, the biggest meadow anyone had ever seen, and a strange gathering of people with yellow hair - yes! - who talked about building something called a parking lot. There was a big lake on a cold morning and three pillars that he was told to stay away from.

I've been told that I should lay out the paints on the palette the same way every time - I guess so that I get familiar with the layout and don't need to think about where or look for the different colors... but I have never been able to do that. Every painting is different, and every palette is, too. I have a bunch of them and together they start to look like some kind of divination practice going on without me noticing it at all.

Had a dream last night: piloting a very large jet plane, on the runway, speeding up for the takeoff, but the runway isn't cleared, still trucks (and a high school track team as well, I think) on the runway. We're gaining speed but are we going to make it over them? I ask the unseen copilot: "Abort?"

The tear, the little horn, the combination (in this particular version) of happiness and sadness. In others (see below) is the combination of scary with some other elements. Clowns are related on a deep level, to police. What's up with that?

A bit more than 2 months after a vitreous hemorrhage and a detached retina (see above) I'm all better, with just a small bubble in my right eye as the only evidence left. They did a vitrectomy - meaning they suctioned all the gel from my eye in order to repair the retina. Now my own PBFs are filling the eye... just a little bobbing at the top.

Modern medicine is the best.

the vids I've been putting up using YouTube are pretty bad. I must be doing something wrong - they get all chunky. Maybe it's just the quality of video from my tiny little camera, but the stuff looks pretty good before it's uploaded. Will figure this out!

Self Portrait As An Old Dog.

You ever feel this way? Like there's a full moon and you just don't feel like howling, much as you'd like to, and as much as you feel it's your responsibility to howl at the moon. It's your job. But still, no enthusiasm. Even Sun Ra felt that way occasionally. I know I feel that way sometimes.

Have I told you about Dorothy's new blog? One of the reasons I feel like I do, maybe. I'm always depressed when I feel a competition coming on. I'd rather just declare myself winner. Anyway, it's her own blog and it's called Don't Surrender, Dorothy, and if she doesn't start getting some traffic soon I will get no rest.

We're going to be working together a bit later on the DVD version of Death As A Salesman. It will be fun. I'm looking for something along the lines of They Might Be Giants. The movie, not the group.
